Hello my fellow designers,
Welcome! And thank you for joining me on this quest to make the world a better place through design!
I fell in love with this idea back in my third year of Architecture School. I remember that moment vividly. It felt like a calling (quite literally) from deep within: a pull to dedicate my work to this concept.
Ever since, I’ve been on a journey to truly understand what it means to design a sustainable building. One idea kept showing up and resonating, again and again:
The most sustainable buildings are those that rely the least on machines.
The more thought and ingenuity we put into the design itself, the less we need to rely on "corrective" technologies to make buildings comfortable. That means truly great architecture is always shaped by the climate it exists in.
“At its core, architecture is always an effort to make the existing environmental conditions more hospitable to human life.”
—Bjarke Ingels
Over the past 12 years, I’ve studied hundreds of buildings and designed countless projects, all in pursuit of understanding the science and art behind good design decisions.
Through this work, I’ve come to see the process as both analytical and creative. I’ve developed frameworks that channel scientific principles while giving space for the freedom and endless possibilities that creativity brings. These frameworks are designed to help us make better choices and get better results—and I’ll be sharing them with you soon.
In this newsletter, we’ll explore buildings from one climatic extreme to another: from blazing hot deserts to icy landscapes. We will uncover how great architecture turns environmental challenges into design opportunities. Along the way, we’ll draw lessons, spark ideas, and grow as designers.
Thank you again for being here. I’m excited to begin this journey with you.
Let’s make the world a better place—one idea at a time.
Warmly,
Sara
